A common question we hear from homeowners across our design studios is straightforward:Is hardwood flooring waterproof? Is engineered hardwood waterproof?
The short answer is no.
Real hardwood is an organic, porous material that naturally interacts with moisture. Fortunately, modern manufacturing offers several high-performance alternatives that deliver the rich, textured warmth of authentic timber alongside genuine waterproof protection.
Is Hardwood Flooring Waterproof? No. This is Why:
To understand hardwood's relationship with water, it helps to look at cellular structure. Trees rely on capillary networks to move water from root systems up to branches.
Even after timber is harvested, kiln-dried, and finished into planks, that cellular structure remains naturally hygroscopic, meaning it actively absorbs and releases moisture from its environment.
When liquid spills sit on natural wood surfaces or seep between plank seams, several structural issues can occur:
- Cupping: The edges of individual planks rise higher than their centers because the bottom of the board absorbs more moisture than the top.
- Crowning: The center of a plank swells and bulges upward, typically after the surface remains wet or after improper drying.
- Buckling: In cases of substantial water intrusion, saturated planks expand so aggressively that they lift off the subfloor entirely.
- Finish Degradation: Prolonged water exposure breaks down polyurethane and aluminum oxide protective topcoats, leading to permanent staining, dark water rings, or wood rot.
What About Engineered Hardwood Flooring? Is Engineered Hardwood Flooring Waterproof?
Engineered hardwood provides significantly greater dimensional stability than solid wood, but it is still not waterproof.
Engineered planks feature a real hardwood top veneer bonded over a cross-laminated plywood or high-density core. This multi-ply lattice structure restricts the natural tendency of the wood to expand and contract across its width during seasonal humidity changes.
Because of this stability, engineered hardwood performs well over concrete slabs and throughout main-level living areas. However, because the top wear layer and internal plies are still made of real timber, standing water left unaddressed will cause veneer delamination, core swelling, and surface damage. It is moisture-resistant, not waterproof.
